Way back in 1989, when I was fifteen (the two headshots circled in this collage which my mother made are of me when I was fifteen, in Malaysia), I had an idea for a story, which involved three demons (I was fascinated by angels and demons). In it, one of the demons had a friend (also a demon) who had a girlfriend (yes, she was a demon too). Demon 1 thought that Demon 2 took his girlfriend, Demon 3, for granted, so he had an affair with her.
However, the story evolved from being about demons to being about humans. Originally, it was about a 15-year-old youth who went to stay with his very rich uncle, who lived in what was practically an oasis surrounded by desert, for the summer. The youth fell for his uncle's wife, whom he felt his uncle neglected and took for granted. They had an affair and he thought that they had something special, but the woman's love was for her husband, and the youth was merely a convenience of which she availed herself. By the end of the summer, the youth was disillusioned and heartbroken, whilst the woman was happy in the arms of her husband once more
Now, twenty-nine years after its conception, the story has become something else. It's been turned upside down and inside out, and the ending is very different.
