The novella I'm working on is different from my published books in that it's coming from a less subconscious, more impersonal place. As a child, I was fascinated by werewolves and their ability to transform. I didn't realize that this ability is involuntarily and that the werewolf might be being controlled by others to achieve their ends.
In The Wolf Man (1941), it seems patent that this is the case. It's a story of witchcraft, with human agency behind the supernatural forces at work. I can't guess how the victims are selected, but I'm certain their selection was not random. The motive might be complex, but it might just as easily be simple and petty, because people can be any of those things.
